    mountainous Information

This is lot of stuff to think over. Post By Atanu.
Am trying to make sense of the growing amount of information and how to cope for few months now…

here’s an excerpt from the writing:

if we produce no additional food, all together humans would finish the stock in three months. Or, a single human can therefore finish this in 1.5 billion years. But it is not so in the case of information. Each of us would take the estimated 18 billion years to finish the information we already have before we ask for more.
Clearly, for an average human, about 0.00000000001 percent of the total information stock is more than enough. About 99.9999999999 percent of the available information is worthless. So how does one go about searching out the teaspoonful of useful information from the oceans of available information. That is the challenge and therein lie the opportunities

I found another post discussing categorizing level of abstraction and could not resist posting here.

Benjamin Bloom created a taxonomy for categorizing level of abstraction of questions that commonly occur in educational settings. He said that there are six levels of abstraction.

Knowledge – When you can recall information
Comprehension – translate knowledge into new context i.e. summarize, describe, interpret
Application – use methods, concepts, theories in new situations
Analysis – seeing patterns i.e. explain, connect, classify
Synthesis – use old ideas to create new ones
Evaluation – compare and discriminate between ideas i.e. critique

    best way to read blogs…

If you ask me what’s the best way to read blogs…especially when you can’t keep up with day to day new posts and you have lost track of some important blogs ?
Go to http://www.httrack.com/ and download offline web browser tool.

WebCopier brings the entire web to your desktop and you can browse your favourite blogs offline at your own pace.

I completed 10 month blogs of Rajesh Jain and Feld over the weekend.
Stories get complete and voids get filled when you read several of their blogs in one go.

It works well with me because, I do not have PC and web connection at home and whenever I carry laptop what can be a better time killer than offline browsing.

Read for the weekend : VOIP

    Will read
Delivering Voice Over IP Networks by Minoli over the weekend.
    Borrowed from my company library.

    Has a mathematical treatment to the subject….but let’s see…

For years now, when I pick a book, my eyes automatically checks for these few things

    > how easy it is to hold a book ?
    > simple content…Does it teach me basics ?
    > fonts. Very very picky about fonts. Pleases eyes ?
    > who the author ? An Indian ?
    > and lastly, the price label.

Btw, am a non-fiction type. Facts are more intriguing than fiction.

    Big NO to fwds

We spend at least some amount of time in a day looking at those fwds which have reached you after hundred cycle forwards and the actual content is buried deep down.
By the time you reach down and discover that this forward was already fwded by another close associate you must have spent few precious seconds.

I strictly stay away from the fwds, however cute or important it might look sometimes.
if any of you have put me in your ‘fwd’ers list…kick me out.
They are no better or different than spams.

But I know you liked this fwd…and going to go fwd.

    how-to list for entrepreneurs

For an entrepreneur, the fundamental question is how to begin…
I came across this post of Brad Feld, a venture capitalist. He has put together a how-to list for entrepreneurs:

    1. Figure out how much cash and time you really have
    2. Pick a domain and go deep
    3. Surround yourself with experienced people
    4. Find angels
    5. Figure out who you want to look like in 5 years
    6. Get customers.
    7. Learn everything you can about what you are about to do
    8. Figure out what to do if you fail

    Where am I now ?!
At Point No. 2 and 3
wrt to point no.1 …Pocket is empty and time is running out really really fast….

How the internet killed phone business

This is what VOIP (Making a voice call using internet) can do to the telecom industry ! WARNING bells.

a MUST read article from Economist.
party to witness the downfall of wired giants and the blooming of exciting new companies…

Today, VOIP calling over 3G networks is still very much a minority sport, but as 3G coverage and transmission speeds improve—something the industry is racing to achieve—it will become common. This represents a mortal danger for mobile operators. “VOIP on mobile is the first real threat they are going to face, and they are in a state of shock,” says Mr Mewawalla.

Why VOIP’s arrival never struck me so very badly ?!

    Bangalore IT.in

    IT.in here…
    Was there last year ?! I don’t quite remember…
But would not like to miss this time as I have leaned on IT more than any of the past five years.
Hope I get a business pass from my company.
That means one day off between 26th to 29th of next week.

Happened to cross Girish Karnad’s book launch y’day at oxford.
“Agni mattu Male” in english now.

I should make this a habit.
Sunday evenings are best spent at a book store…rather at a crowded mall or lonely office.

    v learning

Must have watched few training videos for atleast 4 or 5 times over and again.
Comfort level with respect to what’s happening in workplace and in generally in wireless space has increased enormously.
If I purchased a book and read page by page the same level of comfort would still have been achieved but not in a short time.

Video and imagery is saving so much of time. Why not corporations start replacing their black and white text training material with colored moving images shipped on a CD/DVD.

Am not ruling out the text entirely…but we should welcome more and more of interactive media too.

Not only video there’s lot more to elearning as depicted in the picture above….

No wonder e-learning companies must have bet big on videos…

    Did you know this ?

Send an SMS message saying BLOCK to 222 to block all promotional SMSes thrown at you from AirTel.

Similarly you can block personal loan, credit card, insuarance and other product offering calls of citibank by calling the customer care and asking them to bar all such calls.

These are set to ENABLED state by default. So you can turn it off !
Am saving precious minutes for more important things now…
