Mobility : Where are we heading ?
November 4th, 2005 | by A T M |My speech this evening at Toastmasters….
I have been staying next to airport for 4 years now.
and I see that there’s a four fold increase in the frequency of the flights in these four years.
If we go back in times few centuries before,we had invention of wheels which followed charitos and bullock carts.
Then came bicycle few hundred years ago and We found mobility.
Later sea was conquered with things floating on water and We saw huge boats and ships going across the continents.
On land, We graduated to something like trains which helped mass transportation of people and goods.
Then ford came out with cars for personal transportation.
Then at the start of previous century we saw the rise of planes in the air.
What we see today is a remarkable progress in the area of transportation.
Today we have birds like concorde which can transport us to a diffeernt continent in no time.
From the wheel to the supersonic jet, humanity has made leaps and bounds in transportation.
But if you look at the history of man kind, people never had this kind of mobility.
They were restricted to one geographical area. they neither had our postal system no fax no emails nor telephones.
They were completely isolated human beings.
They hardly moved from place to place.
But look Today.Take my own example.I am born in shimoga. Had my college at Bagalkot. For my job I moved to bangalore.
And my work demands me to go some other nation.
With modern day transportation, all barriers are down.
And Today two farthest points on this earth is reachable in just 24 hours which otherwise
would have taken a life time by bare foot.
Ok even if you cant go to the physical location you still have the means to reach out
to the place with advancements in communication technology.
You have this big network of computers. You have email.
You have instant messaging. Your international call rates are dropping every year.
so where are we heading ?!
Clearly we are going to be a more and more connected society.
We are going to be a more mobile society.
There will be no distance but only two different time zones.
My point is that With the rapid progress in two very important areas transportation and communication
there will be a high degree of connectedness and literally there will be demise of distance.
Slowly you will see that we belong lesser and lesser to one town,
one state or
one nation but we belong more to this human kind and global village.
and I think this is what is being suggested
when I see non stop flights from Bangalore to Paris through my window.
