Distance between Earth and Moon

I was reading Frontline magazine this morning. It carries an interview with ISRO chief. Madhavan Nair. It talks about India’s Chandrayana Mission of 2008.
Picked up few facts.
Distance between Earth and moon : 4 Lakh Kms.
Our geostationary satelites revolve at 36000 Kms…( roughly half a lakh)
In the picture, the observer is 350,000 miles away from the Earth and the Moon, which are 250,000 miles apart.
So, we know how to put an object at a distance of half a lakh kms. Putting something beyond this is a more challenging task.
When some one questioned ISRO’s plans to send a man into space…he says
“We must keep in mind that humankind has progressed only because it has taken up challenges. If Columbus had not ventured [across the Atlantic], today’s America would not have been there”
