    Historica

This is what it read in Businessline’s supplement this morning.
    I quote two lines.

Every job on this planet is boring and monotonous, if you don’t understand the science behind it.
    So very true.

But let me take some time to talk about history than science.
Be it Iraq crisis, India’s Satelite Program, New book of Richard Dawkins,Cricket team for the worldcup or New oil reserves in Bay of Bengal,What keeps me interested in a wide array of topics is the knowing of a bit of history in most of them, if not all.

Subject of History scared me in my High school. It required us to write page length answers in english. No one gave a feeling that History has a ’story’ in it.

When I grew up I happened to read an Encyclopaeida of world history. It had all the colors and pictures. Where did civilisations start ? when did farming start ?Why did they Discover new lands ? Who colonised whom ? World wars.etc
View of the World, for me changed like never before. This is what I read in my Schooling days!!

Now, years later, the first thing I do before I delve into a new topic is trying to know its History and get a ‘bigger picture’, as they say. This is so very important to appreciate and make sense of the present.
Last Friday evening I spent sometime looking for Encyclopaedia of world history.I found few. But they are still far from my imagery of that encyclopaedia. Either they lack the depth and content or their presentation is not upto the mark.
I am looking for one : Encyclopaedia of world history.

    Bangalore book festival – Nov 11 2006

    Blogging from Bangalore Book Festival.
But it’s little disappointing not to find wi-fi not working here today.Had tucked in a laptop, after I read about this in news paper y’day.

Been third timer I guess here.
There has been a sea change in the way I pick the stall and the book.
When I was here for the first time, it was an overwhelming experience. Loads Loads of book greeted me and I could not see any pattern emerging.
Today after years of experience behind me, of browsing the shelves, it takes just few seconds to ‘judge a book by it’s cover’

What titles I was interested in this time ?
    Visual History of the world
Books on wireless and networking in general.

I have picked up two books so far after two hours of scanning.
    CDMA2000 systems
    - I had another book of vijay. k garg.
Content, look and feel of this book also is similar. But it’s always interesting to know how the same topic is dealt by others.

    Basic electronics by schultz.
-Striking a balance between the Theory with practical example and still covering problems which might appear in ’semester exams’.It’s always difficult to achieve all the three in one book.
That’s what I always expect in a tech book.

I read few pages of TCP/IP illustrated in the store itself.
Was kind of a revealation. More about this in a separate post.

    What am I reading ?

Picked up this book after two hours of book browsing at landmark forum.
Was looking for a book, which gives a good background into indian music + some theory. Looked like a good pick. Music in India by Bonnie C wade. First edition Published in 1979. This being written by a foriegner should be an interesting read to get an outsider’s view on the subject. Other book I was likely to pick up was Encyclopaedia of world history by National geographic. 2000/- + Rs tag led to postponing for a later date.

Mobility : Where are we heading ?

My speech this evening at Toastmasters….

I have been staying next to airport for 4 years now.
and I see that there’s a four fold increase in the frequency of the flights in these four years.

If we go back in times few centuries before,we had invention of wheels which followed charitos and bullock carts.
Then came bicycle few hundred years ago and We found mobility.
Later sea was conquered with things floating on water and We saw huge boats and ships going across the continents.
On land, We graduated to something like trains which helped mass transportation of people and goods.
Then ford came out with cars for personal transportation.

Then at the start of previous century we saw the rise of planes in the air.

What we see today is a remarkable progress in the area of transportation.
Today we have birds like concorde which can transport us to a diffeernt continent in no time.

From the wheel to the supersonic jet, humanity has made leaps and bounds in transportation.

But if you look at the history of man kind, people never had this kind of mobility.
They were restricted to one geographical area. they neither had our postal system no fax no emails nor telephones.
They were completely isolated human beings.
They hardly moved from place to place.

But look Today.Take my own example.I am born in shimoga. Had my college at Bagalkot. For my job I moved to bangalore.
And my work demands me to go some other nation.

With modern day transportation, all barriers are down.
And Today two farthest points on this earth is reachable in just 24 hours which otherwise
would have taken a life time by bare foot.

Ok even if you cant go to the physical location you still have the means to reach out
to the place with advancements in communication technology.

You have this big network of computers. You have email.
You have instant messaging. Your international call rates are dropping every year.

so where are we heading ?!

Clearly we are going to be a more and more connected society.
We are going to be a more mobile society.

There will be no distance but only two different time zones.

My point is that With the rapid progress in two very important areas transportation and communication
there will be a high degree of connectedness and literally there will be demise of distance.

Slowly you will see that we belong lesser and lesser to one town,
    one state or
one nation but we belong more to this human kind and global village.
and I think this is what is being suggested
when I see non stop flights from Bangalore to Paris through my window.
