    Number Shi

Shi = Number 4 in Japanese.

    Number-4

This independence day, I complete four years in my current company. Not to reiterate this had been my longest companion of my previous three associations. More I worked and hung around, more I felt the loyalty pays off.

What is the average span of an IT guy in a company these days ? 3 years ?

PS : What is Number 4 called in your language.

    Lost in Translation

lost_in_translationWorking at Japanese offices for an outsider is not easy. An outsider is always assisted by an interpreter. ( a mediator, who is conversant in both Japanese and English).

There was no interpreter helping me yesterday evening. This Japanese guy was trying to ask me this question. ” Can you tell me the current temperature on that device ? “.   I was supposed to reply ” No, we cannot read the temperature until the next software update”.  Simple Isn’t it ?.

We took almost half an hour to understand each other. He would type in something in his phone in Japanese and convert into english. Show it  to me. I try telling him, we can’t.  After figuring out he can’t even make out what am trying to say, I used this translator page.  And it worked.  Imagine, two human beings face to face, but talking in text. Book mark it.

    Off to Tokyo

japanI hate this. But helpless. I have not been posting anything besides complaining about being overworked.  Even when I had something to share, I consciously stayed away.  When you are not in that ‘zone of mind’, that’s the best thing to do.

Some update here before another period of lull. Am off to Tokyo tonight for few days.   Of course, on business.  If you have been there before, suggest actitivies and places.

      Hi Arvind!

Wish you a wonderful experience on your ’round the world tour’.

If you’ve got nothing to blog about, simply post a picture of a local market or street and words will automatically flow. Speaking of which, visiting the 100-yen shops is a must. Lots of goodies at bargain prices.

Let’s see how many strange coincidences you run into this time:) as was with your Koren Trip.

      Till then,
Ah-so! and may the power of Sushi be with you:)

Cool… Yenjoy your stay in Tokyo.
Other than the usual touristy places like Imperial Palace, Tokyo Disney and of course Akihabara, there are some not so known places you can go.

      1. Harajuku Station-Jingu bridge-sunday evening!
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harajuku

      2. The thrilling but short (blink-and-it’s-over!) roller coaster in Korakoen. Btw it’s short in time-wise, not height wise!!

      3. Yoyogi-Koen, again in sunday after-noon. Lots of street artists and music bands. And some amazing tap-dancing if you’re lucky… :)

      4. Hakkei-jima Sea-life Park. It’s actually in Yokohama, but manageable (3 hr journey)

      5. Last but not the least, night-life in Roppongi!!

      :)

    • Avik... 10:04 AM on February 16, 2009 Permalink

Sorry, Hakkei-jima will be less than 2 hour i guess.

    The way we were

This two minute video was done by Revathi, Pradeep and me two years ago for our office annual day. Our office was still small and just handful of colleagues.  Now we have moved on to a bigger facility and there are countless unfamiliar faces.

This video was lying somewhere in youtube with bare 19 views. Watch the video with the music score.

    My first ever musical performance

It had been a culturally inactive year. Thanks to the program I was working on at office. There was abosultely no time for extra-curriculars. To make it up, I bought this keyboard (Yamaha-I425) a month ago. Thanks to Suresh sistla. Big influencer. Kept this news under wraps till I could really play something with the keys.

When I was just laying my hands on it, my colleagues insisted that I should perform on family day, our annual day at office.  Anybody would tell you that it takes anywhere between couple of months to few years to master this keyboard. And I should be performing at a gathering like this ?  I said I can’t.

They told I should atleast play Happy Bday song. But it would be quite unfair if I do that.  So, how do you cut short and shrink the whole learning process and still play at a gathering ?
I logged on to youtube, and searched for piano videos .  Found one. I played it few hundred times, watched finger movements and imitated religiously. That’s how it finally turned out to be. Few glitches here and there, but still a decent show I guess.
A better version, recorded at home is here.  kal-ho-na-ho-mp3

Good job. Keyboard is relatively easier and a wonderful instrument. Get some basic classical notes. Play it. You’ll be amazed to see the finest differences between swaras. Happy learning.

Have you checked your IP address ?

Have you noticed this ? Your PC’s IP address at office. It generally starts with 10.X.X.X or 172.X.X.X or else with 192. X.X.X. Why ? Off all the zillion options to pick the IP address, why only these three. The reason is RFC 1918.

Each address is a reserved pool in each of the Class A, B and C network-types for private use.

    IP address range Address block
    10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255 10.0.0.0/8
    172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255 172.16.0.0/12

    24X3 = 72 -6 = 66

    24 X 3 = 72

    2 X 3 = 6

    72 – 6 = 66

Wondering what math is this ? It’s crazy. I broke all my past records. Six hours of sleep in past three days. I still cant figure out how did I manage it. This was for demonstrating and Bench marking for operator to pick the vendor. Breakfast skips, showerless mornings, dark red eyes and the intense pressue to deliver. We have given our best shot with the constraints we had. We will know how we fared in couple of days.

Sad that I haven’t had a single hour to check out the city of the Seoul.  Hopefully this weekend would go easy. zzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

    Looking East

I have seen a bit of west, but never been to east.

    Aerial view of Seoul

I would be visiting Seoul, South Korea for next three weeks, starting this Monday. Before you say wow, let me tell you it’s a zero-pleasure-trip.

Language and food are the other concerns besides the fact that it is my first ever date with a telecom operator, at their doors. Last two weeks were grinding at office, because of the home work needed to pass the tests. It’s going to be real test of the nerves. Wish me.

[PS: Now you know why Hushpuppies made it to the shoe rack. To Cool the heals ]
