Am no more single and looking….

This one is a biggie and very very special.  We were holding back this news for sometime now.  Parents of both families were not yet met. And they happened to meet finally, yesterday. Yep.  Yep. Am committed now!

This is a semi-love n semi-arranged story.  Nirmala is her name. It dates back to early march of 09, when I was in Tokyo. I was introduced to Nirmala  by my friend Shobha over email.  Then we got to know each other better through email and chat.   Web was the only means for nearly two months. [ There were just two Phone calls, one to get a scolding for a prank and another, 'surprise' b'day wish]

    vini

And when I returned I met her few times. Infact 5 times of the promised 6. And the love struck. This snap was our 5th meet, when I proposed.

Thanks to Adarsh for that timely snap. It was special as the neeli gang was around to witness.

Nirmala thanks joining hands.  What more should I say ?

    I love you Ni !

      Nettu,

This makes us a complete Neeli… we have finally made it a full fledge gang…Nirmala and you are made for each other…I am simply happy for you both.. infact, it has reminded me those days when I fell in love with Jyothi and how much it meant for me to marry the girl I loved…

Its an awesome feeling to marry a friend and trust me; no matter what anyone says, according to me, your partner should be your best friend..and by the looks of you both, I can vouch for the chemistry and frequency you both share..This is great moment for you both and I hope you will be always friends forever.

Let me use this opportunity to write to you some of the nice things that have happened to me over these 6 years with Jo…First of all, it doesn’t seem that its 6 years.. I feel its just some weeks that we have been married..thats the difference a friend makes..I am sure, this is going to happen to u too..

The best part is you will start to feel complete…somehow you both will accommodate each other so much that if you leave her for sometime, you will start feeling lonely..

All songs will sound different..lyrics make so much extra sense..

life becomes more enjoyable..you will see more happy people around you..all things happier happy and nice..

There is so much more..and I cant write everything here.. you see, I too write my own blog..copyright issue:-) Hence will write a separate column for you both in my blog next.. come soon..lets celebrate..this time..over a long drive with Neeli…

Adjusting from Indian culture to American

I received a request this morning. Jules from Vassar College in New York, is writing a  paper on “The process of adjusting from Indian culture to American culture“.  She has asked readers of this blog to give our thoughts. She is interested in understanding few things here:

    # What did you have to adjust to?

    # What is your impression of Indians versus Americans on an emotional level? Moral?

    # What do you consider the “weirdest” thing about American culture?

    # Do you find Americans or American culture less warm/friendly than Indian culture?

    # Have you encountered any racism? How has it affected you?

    # Do you find yourself identifying more or spending more time with other Indians than with native-born Americans? Why or why not?

    # Did you always expect to come to America for school? How long do you plan to stay?

    # What was your knowledge of English before coming to the US? Have you had problems with the language?

    # Are the standards for your schoolwork different? Do Americans view academia differently?

    # What is your impression of food and eating habits in the US?

I am sure you will have something to share, (Atleast with Question No.3, 4 and 5). Please take some time out and fire your opinion.  Thanks.

1.Answering queries as to: What curry I have for breakfast. Hee, Hee! The rest, I ignore and consider lucky living in India (There’s no place like home :-) ).

2.The USA is a developed nation. Like all developed nations, the people there have more advanced needs. What the U.S.Americans consider moral, we Indians might consider immoral & vice versa.

Same with emotions – What we Indians consider sarcastic, U.S.Americans might consider racist & vice versa.

3.Weirdest Things = Anything we can’t do in India. Freely.;-) And anything we can do in India, that we can’t, in the U.S.A.(buy & burst fire crackers)

Well, the weirdest thing I’ve noticed is: You can buy Guns in the U.S.A. but not fire crakers?! They seem to consider the latter as more harmful?! If you ask me, I’ve(we’ve all!) been using fire crackers since we were little. (Now, that’s weird to Americans)

4.All cultures seem friendly from a tourist-perspective. People & places are good to visit; but, living in a new environment requires a lot of change, de-learning & re-learning. Same for all cultures.

I can walk to work, in India. But, I’d have to drive to work, in the USA. Cost of living is atop the roof!!

5.I haven’t been to the USA. But, we have this thing called: ragging; in schools, colleges, universities & at work as well! People in North India crack jokes about South Indians & vice versa. Just like in the USA. Such mild-racist humour has made me more tolerant towards people, as a whole.

6.Why would I visit an Indian in the USA, unless that person was my friend? Once I’ve visited the USA, I’d rather hang out with native-born Americans and learn their culture & share mine.

7.I haven’t any plans to study abroad. From what I’ve heard & know, the fees are so high that the average American student has got to work part-time to be able to pay for their tuitions.

8.We speak British English in India, but the scene is changing with outsourcing & all. I prefer British English & Tea. Thank You.

9.There is an ocean of difference between American & Indian schoolwork.

During my school days, we once received free study guides, for Java & VB, on CDs. There seems to be more application, in US Academia, than Theory, as in Indian Academia.

      10. There are several vegetables, available in the US, that aren’t currently available in India. I’d love to try them all out. BUT, US food, to me, is pretty bland for my tastes.

I like American junk food though.:-)

    The World’s most comfortable shoes

I never wore black formal shoes. Reason being, they are not comfy + You cannot walk fast or run. All due to their make. Inflexible leather and tight sole. Though they please the on-looker for the formal looks, the wearer is never at ease.

Then comes  Hushpuppies black with Bounce technology. Designed just for all the complaints I stated here. I bought a pair at Bata’s store yesterday. At a price tag of 4299/- it looked mehenga.  But when I visited other stores, after marking this one, to check if there are any other brands coming closer to  this make, I found none. Believe me, this is Infinitely comfortable. To bounce in every step.

[ I will reveal why I bought Black shoes in my next ]

How much did they pay you?

    • A T M 10:47 AM on August 16, 2008 Permalink

The very first touch and feel tells you that this Shoe is unlike other ones. Only when you look at the price tag you’ll know that this *should be* expensive. Again, free publicity, for anything I like.

    • Adarsh 2:09 PM on August 18, 2008 Permalink

How can you wear on your feet which is so expensive. I cant imagine myself stamping a 5000 rupee shoe. I would rather hold it in my hands and walk :-)

ofcourse: I would wear a regular Bata Shoeto the office..or a REDtape Black shoe:-)

Tags: cricket, man of the match

    Man-of-the-match and zero sum game

In a cricket match, they award man-of-the-match for that key player who made the difference. Rewarding just one player, inspires other men in the team, instead of letting them down, to try hard and win that title in coming matches.

Let me try draw parallels to a corporate setting. In a software project team of 10, with a composition of three categories of people :

    Type-1 # Performers             -   Say 2

    Type-2 # OK OK Performers    -    5

    Type-3 # Poor performers      -    3

If you recognise and reward just Type-1 performers, the 5 ok ok Type-2’s are let down (don’t forget they form the majority), demotivated and they slid towards category three type. Their productivity dips. But let’s assume this dip is somehow covered up by those overworked top performers of Type-1.  Net result, the team  performs at the same level as it was earlier.

Question 1: Why reward in the first place, if the output of the overall team is not improved and remains the same ?

Question 2: Well…if you still insist that there should be a  tradition of recognition, there must be a cleverer way to recognise. A recognition which does not demotivate the OK OK Type-2 set of people.

Is there a much fairer way of recognition, where even OK OK type-2’s are also pleased ?

    • kk 10:29 AM on August 1, 2008 Permalink

In cricket you know every second of the players play and you are convinced the he deserves it.

    • admin 6:43 PM on August 1, 2008 Permalink

May be you are right, In Cricket there are more eyes around and more judges, on and off the TV, to convince that the winner deserves. And in corporate setting it is just your manager, who could be disillusioned ?

Point is how you treat Type-2’s. They are good many in number, their combined contribution is still significant, but they go unnoticed and unrewarded.

    • Avik 11:30 AM on August 3, 2008 Permalink

To continue the analogy with cricket, let me point out that cricket is a statistician’s dream-come-true. One look at the scorecard tells who is the best (most of the time), so less chance of controversy. Not the same with work. How do you differentiate? It’s a lot more subjective in nature and most of the times the-above-average-employee thinks s/he is way-above-average which is not same. And there is problem with fitting people into bands. What about who is not just ok-ok but better than that, but at the same time not ‘the performer’ also… tough choice…

    • A T M 7:52 PM on August 4, 2008 Permalink

Score board, yea, is a good measure. How about introducing similar score card system for every tasks and activities in corporates. We score singles, fours and sixers and the score board ticks. End of the year, there is no dispute.

    • Adarsh 8:23 AM on August 5, 2008 Permalink

For the Question 1) why should we reward..

The man of the match award money is actually shared within the team.. But, in corporate, if all the bonus that the team gets shared evenly, then the performers will stop performing thinking that their efforts get them just like the other guys.. the poor guys remain poor as they know they make money anyways..End result.. Team goes down the drain..

Now for the question 2) how to motivate the OKOK types.

for that you need a long stick, which is well covered with mirchi powder on one end and the other end should be help by the manager

    • A T M 6:54 AM on August 10, 2008 Permalink

Funny and Practical Adarsh. You fit to be a manager now.

    Separated at Birth ?

Have you ever been told that you are a look-alike of so and so… ?

Recently, one of my colleagues told me that I look like Kumara Sangakkara, and some time back I remember some stranger telling me that I resemble Sanjay Manjrekar.

So I placed all of us next to each other. Do we really look like brothers separated at Birth ?  Notice, both references are cricketing personalities and I don’t have a cricketing gene.

    Update :

After that comment from Arvind, I am pasting Javagal Srinath into the frame.

    Ninnindale, Sihigaali

These two songs definitely deserve all the praise. When nice music crosses great visuals and fine lyrics, magical is not the word. Listen to them… am sure you’ll come back again.

This one from the movie Milana – Music Manomurthy, sung by Sonu Nigam.
Liked those cute little dance steps going back n forth. And amazing outdoors. Any idea which is this place ?

Movie – Aa Dinagalu, Music Ilayaraja, Singers: Ilayaraja and Nanditha.

Contrastingly this one is not a typical melodious male play back singing. But still got the haunt. Recognise these well known structures in and around Bangalore ? Was not aware that Raja sings too.

    hunise hannina neeru hindi

    - bele, soppu eradannu suriri

    Taking stock of Year 2007

It’s time to look back and take stock of the year 2007!

    - Yoga, tops the list. With consistent practice, now my fingers can touch the floor.
    - Trip to Boston in May. My first ever travel overseas was a nice experience.
    - Cartooning. This was always an interest in the back burner. Now trying to run it in the foreground.
    - Laptop. What a possession. Pick of the year.
    - At work, project shift from DO to UAG has been mixed.
    - The search for the Ms. Partner is finally sorta kicked off.

    - Taste of success with Quiz,Table Tennis and movie making was sweet.
    - Trip to Goa was another breezer.
    - Hitchhiker’s Guide to Galaxy and Dilbert Season one episodes. Visual treat of the year.
    - Stock market with some intelligent investing did show some returns.
    - Travel and reading, two things took a backseat this year.

    Arti to Ujwal

I stayed with him at his New york apartment overseeing the beautiful Manhattan. This is when I visited NYC over the weekend 4 months back.

My engineering class mate Ujjwal Kumar. Very smart chap, less talkative and one who keeps to himself. All through the weekend, he looked a lot worried man. After a lot of teasing, he told he is disturbed because of his marriage plans not working out and not finding a suitable match. But never ever imagined that this was in store.

Do you connect these two pictures ? Read the rest at rediff. She is Arthi Agarwal. We’re all yet to come out of the shock.
