    Am on Ubuntu

My personal laptop is now loaded with Ubuntu 9.04.  I know I know..am late. I was always weary of running dual OSes on a system. But looking at the ease with which you can load a whole new OS, I could not stop myself.

All good things don’t come free ? Not true. Ubuntu is a free OS. More Here.

I did not use Wubi. I had an installation CD burnt. Normal partition installation. In fact I have done three installations today. One was redhat/ubuntu and other two with windows/ubuntu.

    Ethernet USB adapter

Your laptop/pc has only one ethernet interface.  But when you want to connect to two different networks, one port is not enough. You need two. So how do you extend ?Buy an ethernet USB adapter. Cool eh ?

Picked this one at Akhihabara electronics market of Tokyo.  For 19$.

    IE to FF

I know am late. But I have arrived. With Firefox. I installed it on my machine this morning and migrated all my bookmarks and cookies to the new browser.

Having used IE7 for few months now, I felt there’s no new learning required to use FF. Their look-n-feel are somewhat similar. Since Firefox has a much larger contributing community, I think it has lot many user friendly customizations.

Which feature of Firefox you think scores over IE7 ?

    • Niranjan 8:11 AM on September 4, 2007 Permalink

Both are extremely good , IE7 design flows well with VISTA . If you are using XPSP2 IE7 looks out of sync.Try Safari the fastest browser as touted by apple , by Apple’s standards it sucks BIG TIME .

Apple’s safari. Yea my colleague uses it in office. Let me stay in FF for sometime.

IE7’s fonts are a treat to the eyes. The readig pleasure is great. That’s what I miss in FF.

    Open Source Anti Virus

It’s frustrating. I had downloaded the trial version of Microsoft’s onecare, the anti-virus, when I purchased my laptop. I wanted to stick with Microsoft. So today, I thought of converting the free to paid version. But Activate clicks from the client lead me nowhere. Wasted three hours just to figure out how to make a purchase. Annoying windows live website.

    I call it quits.

I am downloading a open source anti-virus. Did you know there is one. Calmwin. Dowload it here. It’s completely free.
Google Pack also has Norton anti-virus, but I read that it’s free for only first six months.

Which anti virus do you use ?

    wifi at home with netgear

With sify broadband connection at home, I wanted to set up wifi at home with netgear wgr614v7 wireless router.

It took me almost 10 hours in continuous sitting to get it working. It was not until late 3 in the morning that I found out that you need sify’s support to have wifi.

If you are one of them with sify’s broadband connection and netgear router, here’s how you can go about it. The wizard of the netgear is not kind enough to make your job easier. So I took to the pencil and drawn some sketches. Hope it helps to save few hours.

Leave a message for any query and I will help troubleshoot your set up problems. ( Click on the picture for enlarged image)

if you dont setup you wireless properly , people who have wireless laptop can diescover your connection and connect to your network and use it.Always protect your wireless with secure key .I used to do that when was in US , some lame Non techy guy left his connect with out any protection , i used to connect to hsi network and access internet through his network

      Hai,

I am using sify broadband services with netgear router, I was able to configure my router with reliance. But when I am trying to configure with sify, router is not able to get IP address. I have entered all ipinformation and updated in router. when I check ipaddress under maintenance ip is showing 0.0.0.0, genrally lot of customers visit my shope with laptops, is there any way to access the intenet from any laptop with out running client software?

    • ATM 12:10 PM on March 5, 2008 Permalink

Is your router DHCP enabled ?! If you get to Configure screens of wifi router(which is generally accessible at http://192.168.1.1), If am not wrong, in Lan settings page, you can configure this. Send me an email.

Have you looked at yourself from the top ?

If I have to describe my job, this is the top down hierarchy.

    Engineering > Telecom > Wireless broadband > CDMA > 1xevdo > Rev-A > Rel 5.0 > Testing > Logging framework and MEID enhancements.

How extreme is the niche of work we do.
